Webinar: What is STIR/SHAKEN, and how PortaSwitch helps you comply and avoid penalties

It’s likely you’ve already heard about the STIR/SHAKEN framework intended to prevent caller ID spoofing. The deadline for implementation is June 30, 2021 – that’s only five months away – and as a CSP, you may still be unsure if it affects you. You’re not alone: the new regulation has left telcos worldwide struggling to understand if they are impacted by the new regulation and, if so, how to become compliant.

Join our webinar to learn more about how STIR/SHAKEN applies to you and what you need to change in your workflow. This webinar will be useful for any service provider based in the US and Canada, or those with significant business originating or terminating traffic in North America. International service providers may also want to attend, since similar regulation to prevent fraudulent calls or robocalls may soon be mandated elsewhere.

According to Robocall Index, 3 to 5 billion robocalls happen monthly in the US alone, and about 40% use a false caller ID. The US Federal Communications Commission designed the STIR/SHAKEN framework to address this epidemic through call verification. STIR (Secure Telephony Identity Revisited) is a set of protocols that create a digital signature for a call that signals the authenticity of the calling number. And SHAKEN (Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs) is a suite of standards that define how STIR has to be deployed by service providers within their networks.

Together, STIR/SHAKEN regulations ensure that every call traveling through IP networks within Canada and the US has its caller ID “signed” by the originating carriers, and that this digital signature is verified by the terminating carrier before the call is delivered. Eventually, if a provider doesn’t submit STIR/SHAKEN implementation certificates, other carriers will be mandated by FCC to block any calls from that network. As bad as it sounds, it may get even worse: if the FCC determines that a provider has not implemented STIR/SHAKEN, as required by the rules, that telco may be subject to forfeitures and other penalties.

You probably have tons of questions already. No worries: we learned a lot ourselves while implementing STIR/SHAKEN support in PortaSwitch, and we’re here to share everything we know. During the webinar, we’ll answer the following questions:

  • Does STIR/SHAKEN regulation affect only CSPs operating in the US and Canada?
  • How can telcos from other regions ensure their customers can reach callers in North America?
  • What should telcos do to comply with STIR/SHAKEN?
  • What steps do you need to take to get STIR/SHAKEN working on your PortaSwitch?
  • And more!
